Career Counseling

Counseling faculty can assist Shoreline students with:

  • Exploring your values and temperament as they relate to work and educational goals.
  • Developing self-understanding using interest, personality, and skills inventories.
  • Researching programs related to your intended major.
  • Investigating the world of work and specific occupational information, including employment outlook and educational pathways.
  • Setting goals.
  • Making academic and career decisions.
  • Learning skills for career achievement and change.

There are different ways to explore a career or major and determine which path may be right for you. The following are some options offered to Shoreline Community College students.

 

Career Counseling and Educational Planning

Shoreline students can meet individually with counselors to explore their educational and career goals. Counselors can assist students in identifying interests, researching occupations, overcoming obstacles and gaining confidence. Educational planning provides individuals with information about school programs and the training needed for specific occupations. There are NO FEES charged for career counseling appointments. Drop by the Advising and Counseling Center (FOSS Building, Room 5229) or call (206) 546-4559 to make an appointment.

 

Personality and Interest Assessments

Assessing your unique personality, strengths and pattern of interests can be helpful in organizing information about yourself and making the major selection or career search process easier. We offer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory. Fees per test are $20 for current Shoreline students. If you would like more information, please make an appointment with a counselor to talk about this option.

Exploring Careers

Career and Life Planning Class

This two-credit course, generally offered each quarter, counts as restricted elective credit on most transfer degrees:

 

  • HUMDV 105 Career Exploration and Life Planning:  Identify your unique personality type, interests, values and strengths related to career development and life planning. Explore various career and educational pathways that match your personal and professional goals. Be the architect of your future. Prerequisite: Placement into Engl 100 or ESL 100.

The Career Information Center

The Career Information Center is housed in the Advising and Counseling Center (FOSS Building, Room 5229). The Career Information Center provides students and community members with occupational and educational resources. Catalogs, computer resources, books, reference guides and general information are available to assist in your career and educational planning. Resources include:

  • Books and Reference Materials:
    Many books and materials on general career information as well as specific occupations are located here. Students can check out non-reference books and reference materials can be used in the Center. The Center also contains a video library.
  • College Catalogs:
    College catalogs can be helpful in identifying potential majors at other colleges and universities. Students may check out catalogs with the receptionist in the Advising and Counseling Center (Room 5229).

Academic Planning Sheets

 

Planning sheets for all Shoreline Community College degrees and certificates are located in a common area between the Advising and Counseling Center and the Career Education Options office. Planning sheets specify what classes are required for a particular educational degree program.
