BFET

Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET)

The BFET program provides assistance with training costs at Shoreline Community College to eligible individuals currently receiving DSHS Basic Food Assistance.

Types of Assistance

  • Tuition and fees
  • Textbooks and required class supplies
  • Transportation (bus pass or parking permit)
  • Testing fees
  • Eligibility to receive childcare assistance from DSHS
  • Priority registration for classes
  • Referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources

Eligibility

  • Currently receiving DSHS Basic Food Assistance* (Federal)
  • Not receiving DSHS TANF cash assistance (see WorkFirst program)
  • Enrolled in a Professional/Technical program or in an ESL, ABE or GED program (Transfer Degree programs are not eligible).
  • Returning students must have met Satisfactory Academic Progress during the prior quarter by having earned a 2.0 GPA or higher and completed at least 50% of attempted credits (exceptions made on a case-by-case basis)

BFET funding is typically limited to 1-2 quarters per student and is dependent on the availability of program funds. If your program of study is longer than 1-2 quarters, you will want to develop a long-term plan to pay for your training costs (the BFET Coordinator can help you develop this plan), such as Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA).

If you would like to apply to the BFET program or if you have questions, please contact Sheila Rubio at (206) 546-6967 or srubio@shoreline.edu. Applicants should apply no later than 2 weeks before the start of the upcoming quarter.

* If you are not currently receiving DSHS Basic Food Assistance (formerly known as Food Stamps) and would like to apply for these benefits, please visit the DSHS website.
