Karen Hackenberg February 7 to March 6th, 2012 Strand Beach-found detritus - PETE water bottles, plastic toy animals, and consumer product packages — are the subject and medium of Karen Hackenberg’s current artwork. Painting in oil and gouache, she meticulously crafts images of commercial beach flotsam. In the Watershed paintings, the artist presents humorous ironic images of our new post-consumer creatures of the sea. Castaways from grocery shelf life, synthetic products proudly and cheerily proclaim their natural rights as they strand and break apart on inter-tidal coasts. As gyres of garbage swirl in the Pacific, plastic becomes the new sand.

Ceramics Invitational March 8th to April 17th, 2012 Drink Me 20 artists respond to the provocative title, Drink Me. Using the medium of clay, the artists will demonstrate the wide range of use and imagination involved in the ceramic vessel. This exhibition will include work from faculty, students and invited professional artists, and will run during the annual NCECA (national council for education in the ceramic arts) convention. The national convention is being held in Seattle with the theme of On the Edge.

Associate of Fine Art Graduate Show April 19th to May 15th, 2012 The current graduates of Shoreline’s Associate of Fine Art Degree will present samples of their work. Shoreline offers two direct transfer degrees with concentration in the visual arts: an AFAS in studio art, and an AFAP in photography. Each year, students in the final stages of their degree will present their finest examples of painting, drawing, printmaking, graphic design, photography, sculpture, and ceramics.

Combined Club Show May 17th to July 20th, 2012 Shoreline has three clubs in the fine arts: the photography club, the art club, and the clay club. In this show, the clubs display samples of the best printmaking, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and ceramics from students involved in club activities throughout the year.
