Overview

Biology is the study of life. Biology encompasses a broad spectrum of academic fields that are often viewed as independent disciplines. However, together they address phenomena related to living organisms (biological phenomena) over a wide range of scales, from biophysics to ecology. It is concerned with the characteristics, classification, and behaviors of organisms, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the natural environment. There are however unifying features. All biological phenomena are subject to the same laws that other branches of science obey, such as the laws of thermodynamics and conservation of mass. The continued existence of any biological organism is always dependant on acquiring sufficient energy to overcome deleterious entropic effects.

BIOLOGY PROFESSOR JUDY PENN RECEIVES ELEARNING COUNCIL AWARD
The state system-wide eLearning Council will give three awards in 2010-2011
to recognize award-winning leadership and innovation in eLearning in the Washington Community and Technical College system.

Judy Penn, Professor of Biology at Shoreline Community College, wins for her leadership in starting the Science eLearning Community (SELC), a learning community of Math and Science faculty who are focusing on, among other topics, online science labs.

Ann Garnsey-Harter, eLearning Director at Shoreline, nominated Penn and says:  “her personal initiative to engage her fellow Science and Math colleagues in learning more about online education certainly fulfills the award’s focus on ‘the mentoring of eLearning faculty'.

Penn receives grant funds to present on her project that illustrates leadership and innovation in eLearning at the Pacific Northwest Higher Education Assessment, Teaching, and Learning Conference in May. She will receive their awards at a luncheon session at the conference.
